A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to obtain before they can hire foreign workers. It is a way for the government to ensure that the hiring of a foreign worker will not negatively impact the Canadian labour market.
When is LMIA required?
LMIA is required for most foreign workers who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
How to apply for LMIA?
To apply for an LMIA, the employer must follow these steps:
Advertise the job: Employers are required to advertise the job in multiple places to prove that they are unable to find a Canadian worker for the position.
Apply for LMIA: The employer can then apply for an LMIA through the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
Receive LMIA: If approved, the employer will receive an LMIA which will allow them to hire a foreign worker.
How long does it take to process LMIA?
Processing times for LMIA applications can vary depending on the type of LMIA and the country of origin of the applicant. In general, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to process an LMIA application.
