PGWP

International students who have successfully completed a post-secondary program in Canada have the opportunity to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). This permit allows them to live and work in the country after finishing their studies.

The post-graduation work permit provides international students with the opportunity to work in Canada and gain valuable Canadian experience related to their field of study. It serves as a crucial step toward qualifying for permanent residency under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) designation, which comes with various rights and benefits.

To be eligible for the PGWP, applicants must meet certain requirements:

  1. They must be at least 18 years old when applying.
  2. They should hold a valid study permit at the time of application.
  3. Graduation must be from an approved educational institution where they studied full-time for a minimum of 8 months (900 hours).
  4. The application must be submitted within 90 days of receiving written confirmation of meeting the work permit requirements and being eligible to graduate from the program.

It's important to note that individuals will not be eligible for the PGWP under the following circumstances, according to Canadian government regulations:

  1. Studying in a program lasting less than eight months.
  2. Participating in a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
  3. Participating in the Government of Canada Award Program funded by GAC.
  4. Receiving funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
  5. Attending the Equal Opportunity Scholarship, Canada-Chile.
  6. Participating in the Canada-China Scholars Exchange Program.
  7. Participating in the Organization of American States Fellowship Program.
  8. Enrolling in a distance education program from abroad or within Canada.
  9. Previously being issued a post-graduation work permit for another program of study.
